Student School Board Representative

As a part of its strategic visioning, The Hastings School Board has made it a priority to increase opportunities to include stakeholder voices in their work. One of the most important voices is that of our Hastings Public School students. Through this opportunity, Student Board Representatives will serve as the liaison between the School Board and our students. They will work closely with the Hastings School Board to provide input and share their student perspectives.

Applying to be the Student School Board Representative

An open application process will be held for a one-year term on the School Board beginning the following school year. 

  1. Applicants will submit the Student School Board Representative Application electronically.
  2. Application can be found HERE
  3. Parent/Guardian Consent form is included in the above application.
  4. One letter of recommendation must be uploaded in the application and included when submitted.

Application Deadline

Applications will be accepted from March 1 to March 31, 2024. All applications must include the components listed above and be completed and submitted no later than 5:00 pm on March 31.


Selection Process

Applicants will be contacted by Tuesday, April 9. 
Interviews will be conducted between April 10 to May 8. Two committee members and the high school principal will conduct interviews. Interviews will take place at HHS.

Qualifications


1. Applicants must be a sophomore or junior at Hastings High School or Hastings Alternative Learning Center and must be enrolled for the upcoming school year.
2. Applicants must be making satisfactory progress towards graduation in order to be considered for an interview (HHS principal or designee will determine whether a candidate meets this criteria)
only applicants with this criteria will be considered.
3. Applicants will have an interest in the work of the school board and Hastings School District.

Expectations

  • The student representatives will serve as the liaison between the Hastings School Board and the students of Hastings Public School.
  • Will adhere to the same rules and procedures as other School Board members, including but not limited to confidentiality agreements.
  • Dress for business casual.
  • Participate in discussions at committee and board meetings.
  • Maintain personal standards of behavior appropriate to participation in student activities.
  • Be in good academic standing equivalent for participation in athletics or other school activities and maintain good academic standing throughout their term.
  • Provide a report to the board at each meeting that provides student activities, topics and insights to share with the board.
  • May be asked to do unique research and prepare a presentation to the Board.
  • Participate in quarterly check-in meetings throughout the school year with the Superintendent and/or School Board designee.

Attendance

  • Attend all regular board meetings which are typically held on the fourth Wednesday of each month beginning at 6:00 PM and generally concluding by 8:00 PM. Meetings held during the summer or school breaks are not required but encouraged. All Regular School Board meetings are held at the Hastings Middle School Media Center.  The entire school board calendar is available here.
  • Attend special meetings or study sessions as requested.
  • Students will not attend closed sessions.

Voting

The student representative will serve as an ex-officio member of the Hastings School Board, thus not have official voting rights. However, the student board representative may participate in all discussion before the official vote by the Board.
