Good Afternoon Raider Families,

A short time ago, Governor Walz and his team outlined the Stay Safe MN plan for Minnesota schools. We are appreciative of the guidelines that were outlined to enhance our planning in Hastings. As outlined in the guidance, we will closely examine county level health data to make thoughtful decisions about how to begin the school year, as well as when we will shift as circumstances change.  Partnering with the guidance from state officials, we will use the feedback that we gathered from families, students and staff during focus groups regarding their wants, needs and priorities as we plan.

The Stay Safe MN 2020-21 School Year plan was founded using the following goals:
1. Prioritize safety of students and staff
2. Prioritize in-person learning, especially for younger learners and those with most need
3. Recognize differences in potential spread among different ages
4. Support planning, while permitting flexibility for districts
5. Take into account disease prevalence at the local level.

Framed by these goals, the guidance gives us recommendations of which of the three learning modes should be in place (In-person, Hybrid, Distance), depending upon the number of positive COVID cases, over a fourteen-day period.

Over the next few days, our planning teams will be consulting with our local health teams and more specifically refine our plan for how we will begin the 2020-21 school year. We will be communicating to you often over the coming days and weeks, as information makes sense to share. We will also be sharing current planning with the school board next Wednesday evening.

In an effort to enhance our communication, we are establishing a new web page on our district website, that will be dedicated to providing the latest information related to our fall opening and school year.

Thank you for all of your support during this extremely complex time. As was pointed out during the governor’s news conference, this will be an ongoing and changing process; our teams will continue to be diligent in preparing the best programming to serve our students and families as we share plans that are based on the best information we have.

Sincerely,

Dr. Bob McDowell
Superintendent
